Oil is one of the essential components of a car, and getting your car's oil changed is one of the many car maintenances that you have to keep in mind. Getting an oil change is rather a simple service that can be done quickly, but a lot of car owners delay having it done or just don't know when to get a change of oil.
Don't make the mistake of ignoring the signs that your car needs an oil change. Delaying this service appointment can result in a lot of engine problems in the long run. Want to know if it's time to change the oil? Read on to find out.
1. Oil change sign
Most of the time, the most obvious sign that your car needs to change oil is a lighted sign by the speedometer. If the sign is illuminated, there is a big possibility that you need to schedule an appointment with your mechanic soon. You can check the dipstick to see what's happening with the oil first. If the oil level is low, your car is running the risk of getting damaged because of it.
2. Engine noise
Having a clean oil ensures that your car is a well-oiled machine. It prevents metal-to-metal contact between different engine parts and keeps all the parts working smoothly. Dirty oil will not be enough to lubricate the engine and can cause it to break down. Hearing knocking, rumbling, or roaring sounds is your car's way of letting you know that it needs to have an oil change.
3. Dirty oil
Take a look at your car's oil. If the oil is dark, it certainly means that it's dirty and that it needs to be changed. Clean oil gives off an amber color and is clear. Dirty oil, on the other hand, is murky and no longer slightly translucent. Check your car's oil at least once every month and try to see if it is still clean. You may do so by removing the dipstick and wiping it clean before returning to the oil tank. Then take out the dipstick once again. If you can still see the stick through the oil, then it means that it's still clean. Dirty oil will make it difficult for you to clearly see the dipstick.
4. Oil smell
If you can smell oil coming inside your car, then it is a huge red flag. By the time you can smell the oil as you drive your car, it could mean that there's a leak or that your vent is overheating as oil begins to burn into the car's exhaust. Overheating is a serious problem and can even lead to setting your car on fire. Get your car's oil changed right away as soon as you smell oil inside your car.
5. Excessive mileage
High mileage would mean that you use your car a lot, and that could be an indicator that you need to change your car's oil. It is recommended that you get it changed every 3,000 miles or every three months, whichever comes first. For brand new cars, every 6,000 miles or six months is usually the indicator. Older cars are typically high-mileage oil than newer cars. But it is still best to check your owner's handbook for specific guidelines.
6. Dark exhaust smoke
Seeing translucent vapor out of your tailpipe is common, especially as the weather gets colder. However, if you notice that your car is emitting dark smoke, then it could be an indicator that you would need to change your oil. The smoke out of your tailpipe is a sign that there is something wrong going on in your car's engine - it could be an oil leak or faulty engine parts. Regardless of the root cause, if your car is emitting smoke, you need to have it checked ASAP.
